SHELBY BOYS GARAGE 98 RACING TEAM

Sydney Retro Speedfest – May 3 & 4, 2014 – Sydney Motorsport Park

This event was a collaboration between Australian Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) which owns SMP at Eastern Creek and the Historic Sports Racing Car Association (HSRCA). It proved to be very successful with a large entry over many historic groups. In addition, there was a display and demonstration of some significant historic Formula 1 racing cars which included the newly acquired 1967 Brabham BT23C-1 FVA of Shelby Boy, Chad Parrish. This is a very special car driven by Jack Brabham himself in Formula 2 and also driven in some Formula 1 events as well as the Tasman series.

The Shelby Boys fronted seven cars:

Rick Marks      1965 Shelby GT350     (Regularity)

Kevin Clark      1966 Shelby GT350H   (Regularity)

Chris Holland  1966 Shelby GT350     (Regularity)

Chad Parrish   1966 Shelby GT350     (Group S)

Laurie Sellers  1966 Shelby GT350H   (Group S)

Tony Antoun    1968 Mustang Coupe  (Group N)

Kevin Luke       1970 Mustang Boss 302 (Regularity)

Tony and Kevin are both Shelby owners. Additionally, another Shelby Boy, Carey McMahon participated in the Group C & A events in his ex Skaife Nissan Skyline HR31 and did exceptionally well winning two events on Sunday.

In Regularity, Kevin, Chris and myself headed up teams of four cars each. Kevin’s team won the overall teams prize and Chris’ team was runner up. Kevin was guest driving Warren Jenkins’ very potent down draught webered Shelby as Warren was in the UK. Both Kevin and the Shelby performed very well – this thing is a jet. Chris’ side draught webered Shelby was also extremely quick (although embarrassingly it ran out of fuel in one event) with my poor old Holley 4 bbl variety (with 3.9 axle ratio) left for dead on the long Eastern Creek main straight. Kevin Luke had a bit of a fright in the Boss 302 when the front brake rotor disintegrated at full noise at Turn 1. A change of rotor and underwear was required!

In Group S, Chad qualified quickest of all the SB cars behind a gaggle of Porsche 911’s. A lost hood pin on the warm up lap in Race 1 saw him start from pit lane, however, a fantastic drive saw him claw back to 13th overall. The following scratch races enabled Chad to get back to 5th and 4th respectively, winning the overall SB trophy. Laurie Sellers was debuting his fabulous looking black and gold Hertz. A tad different to drive than his usual MGB or Marcos, suffice to say car and driver are getting to know each other and a trophy for overall second place in SB was a just reward for the time, effort and $$$ expended and a promise of things to come for this combo.

In Group N, Tony was coming to grips with his ’68 Coupe (a Group SB ’66 GT350 may be on the horizon) and drove particularly well with personal best times over the weekend.

My ’65 GT350 carried a Speed Channel camera inside the cabin and I was interviewed about the Shelby and its extensive US race history. The finished programme covering the event will be shown at some point on Speed Channel and a DVD will become available.

To top off a great weekend for the Shelby Boys Garage 98 Racing Team, we won the best presented teams trophy for both the cars and our team apparel. Congratulations to all!!

About 2 months ago, i registered my Shelby and to offer my services to the "Make a Wish" Foundation.
This Foundation grants wishes to people especially kids who are experiencing a difficult time in their lives with terminal illnesses. So on thursday 13 March, i was called upon to drive a young lady (13 Years Old) from one destination to another in my Shelby to meet her Comedy TV Idols, Kath, Kim and Sharon. It was an emotional, overwhelming  but an enjoyable day. It was priceless just to see the big smile on Brodie's face travelling in the Shelby and meeting Kath and Kim, certainly a day to remember for all involved.....

It was a beautiful and warm day, greeting me at the Phillip Island Classic. One of the organisers at the Phillip Island Classic asked me to organise another Shelby Display in the main pavillion which resulted in 7 Shelbys attending which was a great effort. Also, as i walked towards the main pits, i noticed about 8 original Shelby Race Cars in the marquee area and most of them travelled all of the way from N.S.W. which was a great effort. These '65 and '66 Shelbys have been racing in these categories for quite a few years around the country and all of them have racing history from the States. Most of these Shelbys are registered in the Australian Shelby Registry Website. It doesn't get any better than watching original Shelbys racing around the track, the sight of Shelbys and Mustangs on display and the smell of high octane fuel and burning rubber, what a great day! Thanks for the support to the Richard Williams for the invitation, the Shelby Owners for the display, Shelby Racers from N.S.W. looking foward to next year's event....

Recently, i was asked by one of the organisers at the recent Sandown Historics to compile a list of Shelbys for a display at the event. So, on the saturday on the 9th. of November, there were 2 Shelbys on display and on sunday, there were 7 Shelbys. It was a very cold day with some light showers during the day which didn't affect the overall display. The Mustang raffle car was on display which attracted quite abit of attention from the public especially the racing legend, Norm Beechy who also autographed the air cleaner of the raffle car and posed for photos with the Mustang members. On saturday, the Victorian Mustang Club won the best car display which was great effort by all the Mustang members and to Adam Richmond for his organisation of the Mustang Display. Overall, it was an enjoyable day for all, especially the Shelby and Mustang owners. Special thanks to Richard from the Sandown Historics for the invitation for the Shelby Display and also to all the Shelby owners for their support, looking foward to next year's event.

Prior to Easter, I was looking forward to attending the Mustang Nationals at Perth which I was not disappointed. My main points for travelling to the Mustang Nationals were to support the National Mustang Club, John Luca's Shelby Display, the West Australian Mustang Club and spending time with all the mustangers.

On all four days there at the event, the weather was sunny, warm which resulted in a great display of over 200+ Mustangs on Sunday. Leading up to show day on Sunday, I attended the b-b-q and dinner on Friday and Saturday which was attended by Mustang Members from all over Australia.

On Saturday morning, I attended the Mustang Judging at the NuFord Dealership where there were hoists available for the judges to inspect all the under bodies of all mustangs for the original, thoroughbred and modified classes.

Sunday came around so quick for the show; the weather was great, sunny and 30 degrees. Upon entry, I noticed the Shelby display that John Luca (W.A. State Shelby Rep.) organised and all the beautiful Mustangs lined up in rows. There were over 200+ Mustangs and about 15+ Shelby’s which looked fantastic.

Before arriving to the Mustang Nationals, there were 94 Shelby’s on the Australian Shelby Registry and now with John Luca's efforts with my assistance, there are 107 Shelby’s, thank you to John and the Shelby owners for their support. At the end of the show, Brian McDonough asked me to drive one of his Mustangs back to the motel which just happened to be a 2012 Shelby GT-500 650H.P. 6 Speed, I didn't hesitate one second to say yes!  All I can say is that what an awesome drive back to the motel.

Sunday night was the presentation dinner and all the awards were presented. Ian Collins and I were given an opportunity to promote next year's Mustang/Shelby Nationals and the Shelby Movement in Australia, respectively.

All in all, the 2013 Mustang Nationals was organised in a professional manner and congratulations must go the West Australian Mustang Club for all their great organising skills and also to John Luca's Shelby Display, well done to all involved and now I’m looking forward to the 2014 Mustang/Shelby Nationals in Geelong over the Easter break.

Click here for an article from our WA Shelby Representative, John Lucas

It was that time of the year again for the 2013 Australian Shelby Nationals in corporated with the Victorian Mustang Round-Up in Melbourne. Driving into the venue after an hour's drive in the Shelby basking in sunshine was a good sign to a great day of Mustang and Shelby heaven.

After a slight detail to the Shelby to prepare it for concours judging, it was time to welcome all the the Shelby owners and their beautiful vehicles and before i knew it, there were 6 Shelbys before 8am. As the day continued, i was greeted by John Luca, Fred Pascale and Darryll Ashby who are the State Shelby Representatives who had travelled from all over Australia to be part of this major Shelby show and assist me with the Shelby display which i appreciated. By 10am, there were 17 Shelbys on display which varied from 1966 to 2012 Supersnakes which was great to see in one place.

At midday, we were all asked to start our engines to mark our support towards this fantastic show. Overall 500+ Mustangs and  25 Shelbys were on display by 2pm which was a great effort by all especially by the Shelby owners. A successful day enjoyed by a Mustang and Shelby enthusiasts.

Thanks must go to the Victorian Mustang Committee, Adam Richmond (Concours Director), Shelby Owners, M.O.C.A.  S.A.A.C. for their support, looking foward to next easter for the Shelby and Mustang Natioanls in Geelong, see you there....

It was that time of the year when the A.O.M.C. organizes their All American Car Show at the Flemington Nursery Car Park in Melbourne. As of last year, a Shelby display area has been set aside at this major annual car show, thanks to Ian Ross. It was a sunny day that encouraged quite a few early and late models Shelby’s attend this year's display. There were photographers and also Michael Curson from the Gasolene TV Show present to capture the highlights of the show which involved an interview with me to promote the recent Perth Mustang Nationals "Shelby Display" and also to promote the Australian Shelby Registry. Whenever there is an opportunity to promote the Shelby movement in Australia, I will never say no. At this year's event, there were 15 Shelby’s on display which was a great effort by all of the Shelby owners which I appreciate. Debuting his '65 Shelby GT-350 was Paul, his Shelby was drag raced by Mike Gray in the States in the 60's and fully sponsored by Reynolds Ford where his Shelby was delivered from Shelby America. Paul's Shelby has been fully restored to original condition which looks great and earned great publicity at the show. Nice displays of Shelby’s were enjoyed by all and a positive day for the Shelby owners who attended this year's show, thank you to Ian Ross A.O.M.C. and all the Shelby owners for their support.

Recently on sunday the 10th. march at the Phillip Island race circuit, the Historic Classic was organised once again. I was asked to organise a Shelby Display for the event which 10 Shelbys attended.  The Shelby Display was held in an undercover pavillion which helped us because of the high temperature on the day. Also on the day, quite a few Shelbys were invited to cruise around the circuit at a reasonable speed which was a fantastic sight to see. There was positive feedback concerning the Shelby Display. A day to remember for all the Shelby owners who attended the event. Thankyou to all the Shelby owners who displayed their cars and also the Phillip Island organisers for our invitation to a fantastic event, looking foward to next year's Shelby Display....

At the recent All Ford Day at Geelong on Sunday 17th. February 13, Australian Shelby Registry Member, Ron Cremona was presented with the Best Late Model Mustang Award for his 2009 Shelby GT-500 KR. It was a very proud moment for Ron being presented with his award by ex racers Murray Carter and Fred Gibson. Ron and Dorothy have been active Australian Shelby Registry Members now for the last 2 years, showing their support in displaying their immaculate Shelby at various Shelby displays. This award is not the first that Ron has received for his Shelby, at last years 2012 Shelby Nationals in Victoria, Ron was awarded the Best Presented Late Model Shelby. Congratulations to Ron and Dorothy.

Hi All, As the newly appointed QLD State Shelby Rep, I recently attended the  Shelby Nationals held in conjunction with the Victorian State Concours on Oct 21st.

Upon arriving at the grounds at Dandenong, I met up with Nez Demaj, the Australian Shelby Registrar, and also my South Australian counterpart Fred Pascale.

We were soon helping Nez park the record breaking gathering (for Australia and New Zealand) of 28 Shelbys into two neat rows amongst the 500 Mustangs entered in the Vic Concours.

It was fitting that the previous number of 22 Shelbys was bettered, given we saw the passing of Carroll Shelby earlier this year at the age of 89 and the Shelby marque celebrating 50 years.
A few of the highlights for me were the presence of a 427 Shelby Cobra and a 65 Shelby Mustang with race history back to 74, plus a 66 Hertz Renta-Racer fitted with a Paxton Supercharger.
The hospitality shown to us from Nez and the Victorian Mustang Club was much appreciated and we even managed to win a very nice bottle of Yarra Valley bubbly at the Sunday night Presentation Dinner to which Colleen attended with me.

We both commented on what a great time we had. (The food was delicious!)

Nez spoke of his passion for all things Shelby and the benefits of Shelby owners being a part of the Australian Shelby Registry.

Would also like to thank Tony, Kim and Brett from SA for getting Fred and myself to and from the venue. I won't forget that traffic light blast in a twin turbo V8 Merc SUV in a hurry! Can't wait for the next Shelby Nationals!

So to all you Shelby owners here in QLD feel free to drop me a line for a chat about our chosen interest.

Until then, Cheers all
Darryll Ashby

"The Shelby Nationals" were conducted together with the Victorian Mustang Round-Up.

With the recent passing of Carroll Shelby, this year's Shelby Nationals was going to be very special to honor the great man. So, I emailed and phoned the Shelby Registry Members around Australia to ask them if they could attend.

With their support, there were 28 Shelbys that attended the show, I was very proud of the display especially with the newly elected State Shelby Rep's to assist me in organising of the display, it certainly made life easier.
At last year's event, there were 22 Shelbys on display so this year's amount of 28 is an all time Australian Record of the most Shelbys on display. The Shelby movement is strong, alive and moving foward in a rapid rate.
Thank you to all the Shelby Owners that attended the event also the National and Victorian Mustang Club and S.A.A.C. for their support, looking foward to next year's event....
